CPH Hosts Outdoor Festival To Celebrate Cleveland Latino Community

(Cleveland, OH) Cleveland Play House celebrates the Northeast Ohio Latino community’s rhythms, colors, and flavors in a free outdoor festival, Carnaval In The Land. The festival takes place on Saturday, May 25 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the U.S. Bank Plaza at 1350 Euclid Avenue. Community members are invited to join the fun as the Latino and Hispanic businesses that strengthen the city come together to provide an afternoon of engaging community building activities. Festival attendees can expect delicious food, live performances, dance classes, crafts, acitivities, and much more. The family-friendly event is free and open to all ages.
Food, activities, and community resources will be available for the duration of the festival. Attendees are invited to dance during the Bachata dance class at 4:00 p.m. led by Bachatero Dex. At 4:45 p.m., attendees can enjoy multiple performances inclduing a fashion show of Elevando Racices dresses featuring the women of the Latina Image Leadership Program; a performance from cheerleading group Esperanza Lawyerettes; Son Jarocho folkloric dancing from Mexico with Alma Vision: Cultura y Más; and folkloric dancing from the Dominican Republic by Club Dominicano de Cleveland. To close the event, the highly talented, rhythmic pounding drumline, the Cleveland Cavaliers 216Stix will perform at 5:30 p.m.
Community partners for the event include Alma Vision: Cultura y Más, Bachatero Dex, Brazilians in Cleveland, Club Dominicano de Cleveland, Esperanza, Future Ink Graphics, Julia De Burgos CAC, Just Dance, Latina Image Program, Northeast Ohio Hispanic Chamber Of Commerce, Spanish American Committee, The Hiring Revolution, The Young Latino Network, NOAHH, and PERUCAN-OH.

CPH’s Community Development department believes in making our community stronger through collaboration, and we wanted to invite and welcome our partners downtown to highlight and celebrate all their contributions to our city.”
Following Carnaval In The Land, Cleveland Play House invites guests to attend a performance of the final production of the 2023-24 season, In The Heights, at 7:30 p.m. in the Allen Theatre. Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, In The Heights is a music-filled love letter to the community of Miranda’s youth in Washington Heights, New York. The hit Broadway musical details the story of a community rallying together to preserve their culture and way of life despite the rise of housing costs and racial-tensions, with musical numbers that use Latin rhythmns and musical styles along with hip hop and rap. Miranda’s extensive writing credits include the music of popular Disney films, Encanto and Moana, along with hit Broadway musical, Hamilton.

Fink says, “Cleveland Play House is thrilled to present Carnaval In The Land during the run of In The Heights to celebrate Hispanic and Latino businesses and organizations in the Greater Cleveland Area. Community strength is a prominent theme in Lin-Manuel Miranda's In The Heights that CPH hopes to share with our Cleveland community. Carnaval In The Land serves as a reminder for the Greater Cleveland community to support local businesses and to support the arts."
