Schedule: This position will primarily work Monday-Friday, with staggered start times depending on school assignments. Schedule includes periodic evening/weekend/early morning hours connected to Cleveland Play House (CPH) and school-based needs.
Reports to: Associate Director, CARE – Cleveland (Jenna Messina)
The Cleveland Play House mission is to inspire, stimulate and entertain diverse audiences across Northeast Ohio by producing plays and theatre education programs of the highest professional standards.
We believe in the importance of theatre education to the well-being of young people and their communities. We use theatre as a tool to bond community with community, to bolster our knowledge of ourselves and others, and to amplify our artistic awareness as participants and practitioners.
The main curriculum focus for our Teaching Artists is Cleveland Play House CARE Program. CARE is a theatre education program that draws on lessons from social-emotional learning theories, trauma-informed care, and evidence-based literacy learning for students in grades K-8. It uses theatre techniques and exercises to help students develop empathy and broaden their understanding of each other and the world around them, empowering them with valuable tools that can be applied throughout their lives.
Responsibilities include:
- Promoting and modeling CPH's educational pedagogy: Creating an anti-racist, safe, positive, and trauma-informed school environment that is culturally competent and creative.
- Teaching (direct instruction, planning and implementation) CARE and theatre enrichment programming.
- Tutoring students with a focus on literacy.
- Document daily fidelity reporting and attendance logs.
- Create and maintain positive school culture in collaboration with school staff. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Attending school meetings and training as necessary
- Assist in leading professional development sessions for school staff
- Correspond appropriately with school staff
- Attend special events with the school community
- Assist in facilitating students' access to professional theatre opportunities at Cleveland Play House or elsewhere
- Cover for other Teaching Artists' absences as needed.
- Participate in and support the creation and implementation of enrichment programming and ongoing curriculum development, including Cleveland Play House's summer theatre programming.
- Participate in CPH's educational and artistic programs and professional learning opportunities as required.
- Exhibit a strong commitment to working with educators and young people.
- Understanding of trauma-informed care and practices, and executing those practices in the classroom, office and in all assignments as a CPH Teaching Artist.
- Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

- Comfortable in both collaborative and independent working environments.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, with strong attention to detail.

- Ability to collect and analyze information, solve problems, and make decisions.
- Current proof of fingerprinting clearance through the Federal and Ohio State Department of Education is required for employment (completed prior to start date).

Desired Experience and Skills include:
- Bachelor’s degree in education, theatre, drama-therapy, social-work or related field required.
- Teaching experience with diverse age groups in an urban educational setting.
- Culturally aware and experienced incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices across all platforms.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and Google office applications.
This position will primarily work in collaboration with: Director of Education and Artistic Strategy, Director of In-school Programming, Associate Director, CARE - Cleveland, Director of Out-of-school Time Programming, Associate Director of Community and Schools, and Director of Community Development to set the vision and goals for the education department.
