The Paint Shop is part of the Production Department and is responsible for accurately interpreting the stylistic intent of the Scenic Designer and recreating the original design in full scale. The Paint Shop creates, develops and executes all of the faux finishes and other scenic treatments necessary for each show. They paint all of the scenery and backdrops for each CPH original production that appears on the stage of the Allen, Outcalt or Helen theatres.
The 6,000 square foot Paint Shop is located in the CPH Production Center about 5 miles from the Allen Theatre Complex. It is equipped with a 52’ by 32’ Homasote paint deck for painting drops and soft goods, a ventilation system and a 10’W x 6’D x 7’H spray booth. Specialty equipment includes a sandblasting machine, an electro-pounce, overhead projectors, a light table, a tint machine and various pneumatic and airless sprayers. The Paint Shop also houses an inventory of over 40 backdrops and painted scrims, all of which are available for rental or use in CPH productions.
The Charge Scenic Artist is the primary painter and is responsible for communicating with the Scenic Designer, budgeting the paint treatments, purchasing materials, scheduling the work flow through the shop, developing samples of scenic treatments and processes for each production.
The Scenic Artist assists in making paint samples, mixing colors, painting scenery and purchasing materials.
The Scenic Artist Apprentice is a member of CPH Apprentice Program. This program provides the apprentice the opportunity to be in the paint shop every day working alongside professional scenic artists to gain practical hands on experience and the chance to learn how a paint shop operates.
