Tech Specs

Lighting is part of the Production Department and is responsible for installing the light plot created by the Lighting Designer. They hang, cable, circuit, gel and insert gobos into each lighting instrument as specified by the Designer. They are also responsible for all atmospherics (fog, haze, smoke) used in the show. In addition to the stage lights, they provide run lights backstage so actors and crew can safely enter and exit the stage and locate their offstage props.

Facility Info

All three CPH theatre spaces are equipped with ETC EOS Family lighting consoles. We have a moving light inventory that contains VL3000 units, VL1100 units, Chroma Q Color Force II 72 units, Chauvet Rogue RX2 wash units, and various other DMX accessories. Most lighting equipment is stored in the Allen Theatre Complex (ATC). There is a lighting workroom in the ATC where we prep shows and maintain equipment. We also have a 620 square foot workroom at the CPH Production Center where we work on practicals, light boxes and other props and scenery with lighting elements.

Staff Descriptions

The Lighting Supervisor manages the Lighting Department and collaborates with the show Lighting Designer to ensure achievability of the light plot in the theatre and realization all lighting design elements.

The Associate Lighting Supervisor works closely with the Lighting Supervisor to carry out the process of realizing the light plot in the theatre for each production. The ALS takes on the supervisor role for all CWRU/CPH MFA productions. The ALS also supervises the day-to-day operations of the Local 27 IATSE Electrics crew and manages the daily work notes list.

The Head Electrician (HE) is responsible for prepping, hanging, circuiting, focusing, maintaining and striking all productions. The HE also maintains and repairs the equipment inventory and the lighting system in each theatre space and is a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local #27 (IATSE).

The Lead Electricians assist the Head Electrician with prepping, hanging, focusing, maintaining, and striking the light plot for each show. They are members of IATSE. Each Lead Electrician works as the light board operator in their theatre space and programs the console during tech rehearsals and runs the console during performances.

The Lighting Department will bring in an additional 3 or 4 IATSE Over Hire Electricians to assist with the light hang, focus, and strike of each production.
