Bolton Theatre Power

Dimmer Room Power Feed

The Bolton dimmer room is fed 120/208v 3 phase wye from the Bolton back hall electrical closet to the dimmer room. There is a 2000 amp disconnect in the closet. The is also a disconnect in the second dimmer rack. This feed is via five paralleled sets of 500MCM with 250MCM grounds.

This feed supplies 3½ racks of CD-80 stage dimmers and a rack of CCR-600 houselight dimmers. There are also breakers for the three worklight circuits, Ceiling Slot(1), 1st Electric(2), Stage right midrail(3). The worklight relays are controlled from: The booth, backstage right and the the vestibule.

The system also includes an emergency transfer relay to supply a portion of the houselights.

NOTE: Performance lighting circuit distribution uses common neutrals.

The dimmers are all Strand Series 600 SCR dimmers. They are located in the Bolton dimmer room. The control signal is 0-10vdc. These dimmers are no longer supported by Strand Field service. You may get lucky and find someone who knows something but do not count on it. As they are older analog control SCR dimmers they do need periodic trimming. Trimming requires a True-RMS voltmeter. To trim, the bias pot should be approx. 1/8 turn from fully clockwise, the output voltage should then be set to approx 88V(ac+dc RMS) when the control is at 50%. The dimmer must be loaded to trim.

The primary control is located in the Bolton control room. Auxiliary controls are:
  • Backstage Right: Take Control w/ master slider, Panic
  • Orchestra w/ removable pendant: Take control w/ master slider, Panic
  • Vestibule(house left wall): Panic/Normal only.

The emergency list circuits are wired through a transfer relay located in the racks. The emergency power is fed from panel ????

There is a circuit from the dimmer racks for the battery emergency exit light for the SL and US stagehouse exits. This circuit is also used for portable battery emergency lights for the Baxter Stage seating units.

Drury Power

Dimmer Room Power feed

  • 208/120 3 phase wye, 4 wire (500MCM and #4 ground)
  • Disconnect: 400 amp breaker in Bolton back hall closet.

Fed directly to dimmer rack bus bars. There is NO disconnect in dimmer room.

The dimmers are two racks of Strand CD-80AE(96 per rack). Houselights are controlled by dimmers 175-180. Prior to the summer 1997 renovation on the Drury the distribution of stage circuits was with matched individual neutrals. After the renovation we are uncertain of the neutral matching. Each circuit should still have an individual neutral back to the dimmer rack bus.

Brooks Power

The Brooks dimmer room is fed 400A 3 phase wye. The disconnect is a 400A breaker in the Bolton back hall power closet. The equipment consist of 24 @ 4kw and 8 @ 7.2kw Strand Series 600 (0-10vdc control) dimmers and 6 @ 30A non-dim circuits. There are also six work light circuits - Attic, Grid, Traps, W1(FOH), W2(1st Electric), W3(US Wall). The houselights are controlled by 1 @ 7.2kw Series 600 dimmers split to 3 @ 20 breakers..

On stage panel "BA" feeds assorted outlets, houselight fans and booth panel "BB".

The Brooks Trap room has a 100A 3 phase wye fused disconnect to the left of the patch panel. This disconnect is fed from the distro in the room "behind" the dimmer room. The label is "Spare - temp. dimmer feed".

Studio Power

Studio Performance Lighting

The power feed is 3 x 100A 4wire 3 phase wye 120/208v. The dimming is a 24x1.2kw Strand CD-80 pack. Control is via either 0-10vdc or DMX.

Studio Outlets

Breakers are located in Panel LP2B in the access to the catwalk.

LP2B #11 is power for the emergency sense relay. The Relay bypasses switches E & F. The relay is located above panel EP1B in mechanical room #1. NOTE: Circuits E & F always receive power from the emergency source. The relay is a switch bypass NOT an emergency transfer.

Lobby Power

Lighting

The lobby dimming is controlled by a Strand Environ 2 System, 7400 series. The control pad is located in the entrance to the Box Office. The dimmers themselves are located in mechanical room #1, above/around Studio One.

Module Dimmer Channel Zone Wattage Phase

2 4 6 Porch Lights 2.4k B
3 5 3 Rotunda Outer Circle 6k C
4 6 3 Rotunda Outer Circle 6k A
5 7 5 Pillar Lights 6k B

The Bolton and Drury lobby lights are 12v halogens. The transformers for the Bolton are located in the ceiling of the lobby and can be accessed, with great difficulty, from the lobby air vents.

An emergency transfer relay is located directly above the Environ dimmer box. The emergency power is fed from panel EP1B, to the left of the Environ. The emergency feed supplies 1 of 3 20 amp breakers for the Bolton lobby, 1 of 2 20 amp breakers for the Drury lobby and 1 of 3 20 amp breakers for the Pillar Lights. The transfer relay system is NOT UL listed. UL/ANSI-1008 is referenced in NFPA 70(NEC) Article 700, NFPA 110 and NFPA 101(Life Safety Code).

A listing of the presets should be taped to the wall above the control panel.

No one knows what the deal with dimmer 3 is. There is a current draw of approx 11 amps at full. The rotunda uplights appear to be controlled from a switch in the rotunda porch/vestibule.

Outlets

All lobby outlets are fed from a breaker panel(LP1B?) located at the West end of the mechanical room above Studio One. There should be a breaker/outlet map at the panel.

Emergency Power System

The emergency power is supplied via a generator located to the right of the Drury side stage outside door. Normal power for the ATS is from a 400A breaker in the Bolton back hall closet.

The primary emergency power transfer system is located in the Bolton back hall power closet. The system is a UL listed Zenith ZTS Auto Transfer Switch rated at 400 amps. The distribution is from a breaker panel at the east end of the Bolton back hall.

Theater Emergency Lighting

Emergency lighting power for the Bolton and Drury lobbies is supplied from panel EB1B in mechanical room #1(above Studio One). The transfer relay associated with the lobby dimming system is located above the Environ dimmer panel and is not a UL listed system.

Emergency lighting power for the Bolton Theatre is supplied via a tranfer relay in the Bolton dimmer racks. The transfer relay in the dimmer rack is not a UL listed system.

Emergency house lighting in the Drury theatre is supplied by battery units. The is one unit located in the rear of the house above the balcony. A second unit is located on the SR wall of the theatre near the proscenium. These units are fed from panel DA (SR Drury stage). Note the lack of stage power sensing. There are additional units located at the rear of the house and above the exit lower house right. These units are backed by the generator so they aren't on for very long.

Emergency house lighting in Studio One is a subset of the ceiling worklights. Worklight switches E & F are bypassed by a power sensing relay in panel LP2B. Circuits E & F are fed from emergency power from panel EP1B.

Emergency house lighting in the Brooks theatre and lobby is from battery backup units.
