FUSIONFEST2011 : Come Stay the Day!
April 18, 2011 by Laura Kepley, Associate Artistic Director in 2010-11 Season
FusionFest 2011 culminates in a day-long celebration this Saturday, April 23. Audience members can see multiple shows - the adventurous theatre-goer could see 4 shows on that one day (we triple-dog-dare you). For some entertainment between performances, we have devised a few interactive lobby events. Our lobby activity springs from the work being presented on our stages.
In Bolton Lobby – Jill Davis (Charge Scenic Artist at CPH) will be leading the creation of a FUSIONFEST ACTION PAINTING. Audience members will be invited to paint in the style of Jackson Pollock. Smocks provided!
Also in the Bolton Lobby – Artistic intern Cyrus Taylor will be encouraging audience members to conduct a gravity experiment illuminating Emilie du Chatelet and Voltaire’s... more
Bringing a Painter's Gift to the Stage

I have loved the story of My Name is Asher Lev since I was seventeen when I read Chaim Potok’s novel for the first time. This remarkable story gives us insider access to two distinct worlds – the Hasidic Jewish community in Crown Heights Brooklyn in the 1950s and the mid-century American art world, more specifically the mind of a genius artist working at that time.
Our production strives to accurately and authentically represent these two worlds. So, how do we begin to understand? Sounds old-fashioned, but my first stop was the library. I read many fascinating books, many by Chaim Potok himself, such as Wanderings: Chaim Potok’s History of the Jews. Last summer, my... more

The Kite Runner: A window onto another country
based on the best-selling novel and film, will be playing here at The Cleveland Play House October 15 - November 7, 2010. The tale of friendship, family, loyalty, betrayal, and the possibility of redemption are all displayed brilliantly in the production adapted by Matthew Spangler and directed by Marc Masterson. There are many key choices by the director and design team that help portray the different locations and culture throughout the play.
So a curious audience member might ask:
Is the location of Afghanistan predominant in the play? How are we going to get a feel for and relate to being in... more

Since 2003, more than ten million people have found themselves captivated by Khaled Hosseini’s novel The Kite Runner. Amir’s epic story begins in his childhood in 1970s Kabul and spans the Soviet occupation and war in the 1980s, his escape to America and his eventual return to a Taliban-controlled Afghanistan in the 1990s. It encompasses the fates of his family, his neighbors and his closest childhood companion—his servant Hassan—whose life is forever changed by actions that Amir comes to regret. Against a colorful sweep of culture and history, The Kite Runner remains grounded in the experiences of friendship and growing up, betrayal, loss and redemption. While The Kite Runner has attracted media attention because of Afghanistan’s continued presence on the evening news, the book itself... more

September 30, 2010 by in 2010-11 Season
We want to thank members of the Cleveland Highland Dancers -- Jordan Whitson, Alyssa Petitti, Amanda Nelson, Alicia Diamond -- and piper Michael Crawley for performing for our Opening Night crowd at THE 39 STEPS. Showcasing the Scottish Highland Dancing under the direction of Kathleen Crawley Donnelly, along with Heather Dolan Dilulio and Sarah Serfass Tancredi, these dancers drew repeated applause as they displayed their talent in the lobbies of The Cleveland Play House.

Handcuffed for Half Price

TICKET PROMOTION: Come to The 39 Steps Handcuffed to Your Date and Buy Tickets for Half Price!
In The 39 Steps, our dashing hero Richard Hannay finds himself unwillingly handcuffed to a hostile (but beautiful) woman for the night. It works out pretty well for him.
So we thought we’d offer our patrons the same chance at sparking a love connection through strategic metalware.
Show up to any performance of The 39 Steps handcuffed to your date and you’ll be able to buy tickets to that night’s performance for half price.
To clarify the rules, this promotion is good for adult regular price tickets ($46 - $66) purchased at the box office the day... more
