Modern Day Epistolary Writing
October 06, 2011 by CPH Education Department in Daddy Long Legs
Daddy Long Legs is adapted from the epistolary novel of the same title written by Jean Webster in 1912. Written almost a century ago, when letter writing was the main form of self-expression and communication, Daddy Long Legs is a story of an orphaned girl who receives an education with help from a mysterious benefactor.
The orphaned girl, Judy, communicates the intricacies of her life beautifully to her benefactor, Daddy, through her letters and we come to know and admire her as she chronicles her every day life with detail and zest. However, with the advent of cell phones, text messaging and email, is letter writing is becoming a thing of the past? What if Daddy Long Legs was written in 2012 and, instead of writing letters, Jerusha communicated via text message?
